The second Working Group meeting of the “Project for Determining Nitrate-Sensitive Zones and Making Action Plans”, which is owned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and coordinated by TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM), started on 3 September 2019 with the opening remarks of Mr. Hasan ÖZLÜ, Director General of Agricultural Reform in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
As part of the project that was initiated on 27 November 2018, nitrate-sensitive zones in all the river basins of Turkey will be determined and action plans will be made accordingly. Dr. Ali Kılıç ÖZBEK, Head of the Department for the Protection of Agricultural Environment and Natural Resources, chaired the meeting; and Dr. Selma AYAZ, TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute Director, informed the participants on the progress taken in the Gediz River Basin that is determined as the pilot basin. The project team shared their findings within the scope of the project with the participants through presentations on geographic information system studies, water quality modeling studies and underground and surface water nitrate-sensitive zone determination studies. The studies that have been and will be conducted within the framework of the Code of Good Agricultural Practices were explained by the academics of Ankara University, Ege University, Isparta University of Applied Sciences, Ondokuz Mayıs University and Selçuk University.
The Working Group of the Project was composed of specialists from the relevant Departments of the General Directorate of Agricultural Reform, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, General Directorate of Water Management, General Directorate of Livestock, General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture, TAGEM and BÜGEM, officials from the relevant provincial directorates of agriculture and academics from Ankara University, Ege University, Isparta University of Applied Sciences, Ondokuz Mayıs University and Selçuk University.
The meeting was finalized with the questions of the participants and a general review.
