GÜRHEP PROJECT INAUGURATED

The inauguration meeting was attended by the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning General Director of Environmental Management Mr. Sebahattin DÖKMECİ, the Head of Department for Air Management Ms. Nazan ÖZYÜREK and department staff, TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center President Dr. Osman OKUR, the Director of Environment and Cleaner Production Institute Dr. Selma AYAZ, the Project Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Nesimi ÖZKURT and other project staff and 66 representatives in total from the municipalities and provincial Directorates of Environment and Urban Planning of 20 Cities covered by the project (Ağrı, Aksaray, Düzce, Çanakkale, Erzincan, Giresun, Isparta, Kars, Kastamonu, Kırıkkale, Kırklareli, Kırşehir, Nevşehir, Niğde, Osmaniye, Şırnak, Siirt, Yalova, Yozgat, Zonguldak).

As part of the project signed between TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center and the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning on 15 February 2021, and within the scope of the principles and criteria specified by the regulation and the relevant EU Directive; studies have been initiated to develop noise model data sets and to calculate noise levels for 20 provinces. Strategic noise maps will be made for detecting current noise levels and determining noise-affected persons, residences, schools and hospitals in the settlement areas covered by the project.

In his opening remarks, MAM President Dr. Osman OKUR told about the projects for making strategic noise maps, noise action plans and noise barrier systems by the Environment and Cleaner Production Institute which develops scientific and technological solutions to environmental problems. He added that, with the completion of the project, TÜBİTAK MAM will have made strategic noise maps of 59 cities in Turkey.

General Director of Environmental Management in the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning Mr. Sebahattin DÖKMECİ told about environmental noise projects conducted with TÜBİTAK in previous years. He emphasized the importance of noise control in creating more silent and livable cities.

Director of Environmental Noise and Vibration Management in the General Directorate of Environmental Management Ms. Nuray HÜSMEN made a presentation about the all studies on noise legislation and environmental noise management conducted by other organizations with the support of the Ministry. Project Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Nesimi ÖZKURT delivered a presentation on the importance of the project, working plan, project outputs, strategic noise mapping and noise inspection.

The Director of Environment and Cleaner Production Institute Dr. Selma AYAZ made a closing speech expressing her thanks to everybody spending effort for the project, especially the officials of the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning, and stated that the Institute project team will continue to take pioneering steps for the mitigation of noise in cities.

The Head of the Department for Air Management Ms. Nazan ÖZYÜREK stated that, with this project for the noise mapping of 20 provinces in Turkey, the studies of the all 66 provinces which require mapmaking will be completed, and expressed her best wishes for the success of the project.
