The Workshop on "Tools and indicators for the integrated assessment of the Black Sea’s environmental status" was held by TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) on 19-20 June 2019 in Istanbul within the framework of the ANEMONE Project (with a focus on ”Assessing the vulnerability of the Black Sea marine ecosystem to human pressures”).
The workshop was attended by the partners of ANEMONE and EMBLASplus projects from Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Georgia and Russian Federation and speakers from international organizations like the Black Sea Commission (BSC), the European Commission Joint Research Center (EC JRC), the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR) and specialists from Spain (AZTI) and Denmark (NIVA).
The ANEMONE Project aims to bring about, through collaborative efforts among partners, a common strategy for the Joint Monitoring of the Black Sea, employing the most adequate and agreed assessment criteria and indicators, in order to assess the status of the Black Sea, as a basis for management actions. The project also identifies the needs of the marine sector and tries to find solutions that will deepen the knowledge of environmental specialists.
General objectives of the workshop
- To allow sharing of experience and to apply indices in a coordinated manner for making a regional status assessment for the Black Sea
- To evaluate the suitability of NEAT (Nested Environmental status Assessment Tool) and CHASE (Chemical Status Assessment Tool) for use in environmental assessment of the Black Sea marine environment.
The ANEMONE project is funded by the Cross-Border Cooperation Joint Operational Program “Black Sea Basin - 2014-2020”, and operated, under the leadership of the Romanian National Institute for Marine Research and Development (NIMRD), by a team composed of members from research centers in Turkey (TÜBİTAK MAM), Bulgaria (Institute of Oceanology - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences - IO-BAS) and Ukraine (Ukr-SCES) and NGOs in Romania (Mare Nostrum) and Turkey (TÜDAV).
